Environmental Health Officers at Akrofuom District Assembly as part of their mandate embarked in a health education exercise on open defecation at the Methodist Church. The exercise was geared by three Environmental Health Officers and one National Service personnel.
Open Defecation is the practise whereby people dispose of human excreta into bushes, water bodies and other public places. This practise of Open Defecation in common within the jurisdiction of the District Assembly. This is due to the absence of sanitary latrines at homes. People also prefer Open Defecation due to the freedom it gives them.
Open Defecation contaminates the environment and spreads diseases (Diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid, dysentery). These preventable killers of children result from poor sanitary and hygiene condition and contributes to stunting, which affects the physical and mental development of children.
Measures to control open defecation
- Church members were encouraged to report to the Environmental Health Unit persons who are caught in this act
- Report to the Assembly if a household on individual wants to build a sanitary facility.
- Taskforce to arrest offenders
- Persecution of offenders.
