The Akrofuom District Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee on Sanitation (DICCS) has been inaugurated at Akrofuom by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Maurice Jonas Woode.
The committee among many other responsibilities will provide technical assistance to field facilitators in the sitting of household toilet facilities and ensure that innovative designs are adopted; provide the necessary support to ensure that data collected in the programme implementation is of the highest quality; and also provide the platform for learning and sharing of experiences from sanitation implementation partners in the district.
The committee will also provide back up support to the field facilitation teams to ensure that they overcome difficulties encountered on the field.
Inaugurating the committee, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Maurice Jonas Woode congratulated the members of the committee and expressed optimism that they will work hard to achieve the targets that have been set for them.
He also assured of the Assembly’s preparedness to assist the committee to enable them achieve their targets, thus they should not hesitate on calling on him whenever the need be.
He also revealed that the Assembly in its resolve to ensure that its people have proper places of convenience is constructing places of convenience in almost every community in the district. He revealed that the facilities are near completion and would soon be handed over to the communities for usage.
Hon. Woode however, was worried with the planning of the old buildings in the district which will make household toilets difficult to achieve but expressed optimism that there will be a way out.
For his part the Regional Environmental Officer, Mr. Don Awaltongo also congratulated the committee members and charged them to work hard to meet their targets. He also congratulated the Akrofuom District Assembly for responding swiftly to the call on them to form the committee in order to help stop open defecation and also assist households to get their own toilets.
The chairmen of the committee who is also the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Ebenezer Ntiamoah assured the gathering that together with the team members will work hard to achieve the targets that have been set for them.
He added that the Assembly’s regards for proper sanitataion will make their mandate easy to achieve.
The committee is made up of the District Coordinating Director as the Chairman, the District Environmental Health Officer as the Secretary, a representative from the Education Directorate, a representative from the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, a representative from Works Department and a representative from the Planning Unit.
The other co-opted members are from the Ghana Health Service, NADMO and the Information Services Department.
